We acknowledge the ancestry of the Kalapuya people whose land we are on today. The Kalapuya People were subject to genocide, ethnic cleansing, and forced displacement from their homelands by the U.S. Government and white settlers to what are now the Grand Ronde and Siletz reservations. Today’s Kalapuya peoples are now members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and continue to make important contributions throughout communities across the land we now call Oregon.
We share this information out of humility and respect for the Kalapuya homeland, and for Indigenous Peoples who continue to live and thrive here. We are committed to sustainably managing this land and the local food systems; we know this work cannot be done effectively or responsibly without honoring the past, present, and future of Indigenous land. This acknowledgment is the first step on a journey toward bettering our Co-op’s understanding, practices, and relationships with Indigenous Peoples on whose ancestral lands we hope to foster a sustainable local food system for all.
